Vesterbro

Vesterbro is a densely populated urban district located directly west of Copenhagen's city center, bordered by the Central Railway Station and the Carlsberg brewery area. The neighborhood developed in the late 19th century as a working-class residential area and has been the site of significant criminal activity documented in Danish and Scandinavian true crime literature.

From the 1960s through the 1990s, Vesterbro gained notoriety as Copenhagen's primary red-light district, concentrated particularly along Istedgade, the neighborhood's main thoroughfare. The area became associated with street-level prostitution, drug trafficking, and organized criminal networks. During the 1980s heroin epidemic, Vesterbro was heavily affected by open-air drug markets and related violent crime, making it a focal point for Danish law enforcement operations and social policy debates.

The district has been the setting for numerous Danish criminal cases and investigations, including activities by outlaw motorcycle gangs such as the Hells Angels, who established a presence in the area. Vesterbro's Pusher Street and surrounding blocks were known for concentrated narcotics distribution before significant police crackdowns in the 1990s and 2000s.

Since the early 2000s, Vesterbro has undergone substantial gentrification and urban renewal, though it remains relevant in true crime discussions of Copenhagen's criminal history. The neighborhood appears frequently in Danish true crime documentaries, books, and media coverage examining organized crime, vice enforcement, and urban drug policy in Scandinavia.
