Clifford Olson remains one of Canada's most notorious serial killers. Between 1980 and 1981, the Vancouver-area predator systematically abducted and murdered at least eleven young people aged between 9 and 17. He was convicted of all eleven murders and sentenced to eleven consecutive life sentences—a case that shocked the nation and transformed how Canadian law enforcement approached serial crime investigations.
Now, more than four decades later, a new true-crime podcast is bringing fresh scrutiny to Olson's crimes and the controversial investigation that brought him to justice. *Calls from a Killer*, part of CBC's *Uncover* series, features recordings of jailhouse phone calls that reporter Arlene Bynon conducted with Olson over many years. Working alongside Nathaniel Frum—the grandson of her former reporting partner—Bynon has created a series that goes beyond the headlines to examine what really happened during one of Canada's darkest criminal periods.
The podcast explores the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) investigation that eventually led to Olson's arrest. Police linked him to the deaths of nine children whose bodies were discovered nude and bearing signs of extreme violence—either bludgeoned or stabbed. The investigation itself became notable for its scale and the resources devoted to stopping a killer who was hunting children with impunity.
One of the most controversial aspects of the Olson case—and one that *Calls from a Killer* addresses directly—was the so-called "cash for bodies" deal. In a bid to locate the remains of murdered children, authorities negotiated with Olson, ultimately agreeing to payments that would go to his wife, Joan Olson. The arrangement was widely condemned at the time, and public anger at Joan Olson for accepting the money was intense and sustained.
The podcast does not shy away from this moral complexity. Later episodes examine Joan Olson's perspective on the payments and explore allegations that she had endured an abusive relationship with Clifford—context that complicates the public's initial condemnation of her actions.
Beyond the eleven confirmed murders, *Calls from a Killer* raises a troubling possibility: that Olson may have been responsible for additional killings that remain officially unsolved. The series explores speculation that he could have been involved in murders attributed to other killers, including possibly some connected to the Seattle-area Green River killer. These suggestions remain unproven, but the podcast uses Olson's own words—captured in the jailhouse recordings—to examine whether the full scope of his violence has ever been established.
